Hillary Clinton is hoping to make history on Tuesday by being elected the nation’s first woman president. While the impact of Clinton’s gender on her candidacy is viewed very differently by her supporters and voters who back Donald Trump, there also is a gender gap among Clinton’s supporters.
Last winter, in the weeks leading up to what would be a very long presidential-primary season, New York went to Iowa and New Hampshire to interview Republicans about their outlooks on the election. They opened up about their hopes—but especially about their fears. The biggest theme was a sense that the country was under siege, by threats both domestic and foreign, and needed the guidance of a tenacious leader.

Tuesday night on Fox News, host Megyn Kelly drove Donald Trump surrogate Newt Gingrich into a contemptuous, finger-jabbing rage by insisting that Trump’s alleged history of sexual predation is a story worth covering. Gingrich, the thrice-married co-author of a novel featuring a “pouting sex kitten” Nazi spy, sneered at his uppity female interlocutor: “You are fascinated by sex and you don’t care about public policy.”
A growing number of prominent Republican women are worried that as members of their male-dominated party step up to defend Donald Trump against accusations of sexual assault, they are causing irreparable damage to the GOP’s deteriorating relationship with female voters.
