Deena Zaru, CNN – December 29, 2015

Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump again defended her father amid accusations of sexism after his attacks against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and past jabs at Carly Fiorina and FOX News anchor Megyn Kelly. “He 100% believes in equality of gender, so, yes, absolutely — socially, politically, and economically, confidence in women to do any job that a man can do, and my whole life has been proof of that,” the 34-year-old said in a cover story interview with Town and Country magazine, which will be out on newsstands January 5.

Kids and Candidates a Potent Combination

Ben Schreckinger, Politico – December 23, 2015

The use of candidates’ children in campaigns is just another part of the process, said conservative Iowa radio host Steve Deace, a Cruz supporter. “Four years ago, [Rick] Santorum’s kids were here constantly. People were constantly worried, concerned, praying for Bella,” he said, referring to Santorum’s daughter, now 7, who suffers from a potentially fatal chromosomal condition. “She almost had as high name recognition as he did.” But when the kids get swept up in critical political commentary, the backlash can be fierce. Within hours of putting it online, the Post pulled the cartoon, which depicted Cruz as an organ grinder with a Santa hat, holding two leashed monkeys representing Caroline, 7, and Catherine, 5.

Hands off the Kids, You Low-Energy Jackass

Susan Milligan, US News and World Report – December 23, 2015

Candidates and elected officials have struggled with how to use – or not use – their own children in their campaigns. During the campaigns, candidates tend to favor showing their spouses and kids, depicting an image of a family-oriented candidate. That can work both ways for female contenders, however. If women running for office do not show photos of their children on their campaign websites, they come across as untraditional or uninterested in children. But when the female candidates do show their children or bring them on the trail, it raises questions – not directed at fathers – about whether they will be able to juggle family and legislative duties, says Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

Ted Cruz Coaching His Family Through a Campaign Ad Is Awkward as Hell

Brian McManus, Vice – December 3, 2015

By law, super PAC’s aren’t allowed to coordinate with the political campaigns that they support. The law has produced a number of absurdities in the campaign finance system, one of which is the campaign practice of quietly uploading raw footage of the candidate onto public sites like YouTube, so super PACs can legally use the material in their own ads. The hope, of course, is that no one will notice the videos. But CNN’s Chris Moody did, stumbling on hours raw footage from a Ted Cruz campaign ad shoot.

Why You Don’t See Donald Trump’s Wife Melania Out on the Campaign Trail

Lauren Effron, ABC News – November 20, 2015

Since Donald Trump announced in June he was making a run for the White House, his wife Melania Trump has been conspicuously absent from the campaign trail. Sitting beside her husband, Melania Trump told Barbara Walters in an interview for ABC News’ “20/20” that the reason she has stayed behind is to be with their 9-year-old son Barron at home in New York City. “It’s my choice not to be there [on the campaign trail],” Melania, 45, told Walters. “I support my husband 100 percent, but … we have a 9-year-old son together, Barron, and I’m raising him.”
